Hobart Mercury Monday 25/8/2008 Page: 11 NEW greenhouse gas emission targets have been set by Hobart City Council. Hobart Lord Mayor Rob Valentine said the council had reduced its emissions by more than 75 per cent since 1996, mainly achieved by collecting gases from landfill and wastewater treatment plants to generate electricity. He said additional cuts would be more difficult and costly, but the council had agreed in principle to measures to achieve a further cut in its carbon footprint and energy consumption, including setting a target of a 30 per cent cut in its remaining greenhouse gas emissions by 2020. Ald Valentine said the council would consider carbon offsets as an option to achieve a possible zero carbon footprint by that year. |
